MCP servers for Zed
LocalZed's agent panel talks to MCP servers it calls context servers. Install one as an extension, or add a custom entry in settings.json.
How to add an MCP server to Zed
- Check Extensions first: many popular servers ship as Zed extensions that configure themselves.
- For anything else, open the Agent panel → Settings → Add Custom Server, or add a "context_servers" entry to settings.json.
- Give the entry a command and args; restart the server from the panel if it does not show as running.
- Enable its tools in the agent profile you use.

"context_servers": {
"filesystem": {
"source": "custom",
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/you/projects"]
}
}
}
The example uses the reference filesystem server. Every listing on mcp.site shows its own command, args and environment variables, usually with a ready-made snippet for Zed.
Hosted servers. Zed runs local stdio servers. For a hosted server, point a stdio bridge such as mcp-remote at its URL and use that as the command.
Config formats change between releases. If a step looks different in your version, the Zed Industries documentation ↗ is the source of truth.
