LocalAmazon Q Developer, for the CLI and IDE plugins, loads MCP servers from mcp.json, globally or per workspace.

- Create ~/.aws/amazonq/mcp.json (or .amazonq/mcp.json inside the project).
- Add servers under "mcpServers" with command and args.
- Run q chat, or open the IDE chat, and type /tools to see the loaded tools.

"filesystem": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/you/projects"]
}
}
}
The example uses the reference filesystem server. Every listing on mcp.site shows its own command, args and environment variables, usually with a ready-made snippet for Amazon Q Developer.
Config formats change between releases. If a step looks different in your version, the AWS documentation ↗ is the source of truth.
