MCP servers for Visual Studio Code
Local RemoteVisual Studio Code uses MCP servers in GitHub Copilot agent mode. Servers live in .vscode/mcp.json per workspace or in your user profile, over stdio, HTTP or SSE.
How to add an MCP server to Visual Studio Code
- Run "MCP: Add Server" from the Command Palette, or create .vscode/mcp.json by hand.
- Declare each server under "servers" with a "type" of stdio (command + args) or http (url).
- Open the Chat view, switch to Agent mode and click the tools icon to see and enable the server's tools.
- Use the "inputs" section for tokens so VS Code prompts for them instead of storing them in the file.

"servers": {
"filesystem": {
"type": "stdio",
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "${workspaceFolder}"]
},
"example-remote": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://example.com/mcp"
}
}
}
The example uses the reference filesystem server. Every listing on mcp.site shows its own command, args and environment variables, usually with a ready-made snippet for Visual Studio Code.
MCP support ships in VS Code 1.99 and later. A workspace mcp.json committed to the repo gives the whole team the same tools.
Config formats change between releases. If a step looks different in your version, the Microsoft documentation ↗ is the source of truth.
