Local RemoteGemini CLI, Google's open-source terminal agent, loads MCP servers from the "mcpServers" block in settings.json, over stdio, SSE or streamable HTTP.
How to add an MCP server to Gemini CLI
- Edit ~/.gemini/settings.json (or a project-level .gemini/settings.json).
- Add servers under "mcpServers": command and args for a local server, httpUrl for a hosted one.
- Run gemini and type /mcp to list the servers and the tools they expose.

The example uses the reference filesystem server. Every listing on mcp.site shows its own command, args and environment variables, usually with a ready-made snippet for Gemini CLI.
