MCP servers for Windsurf
Local RemoteWindsurf's Cascade agent uses MCP servers from mcp_config.json, which you can edit from the MCP panel inside Cascade.
How to add an MCP server to Windsurf
- Open Cascade, click the MCP (plug) icon and choose Configure, or edit mcp_config.json directly.
- Add the server under "mcpServers": command and args for a local server, serverUrl for a hosted one.
- Save and press Refresh in the MCP panel. Tools appear once the server has started.
- Ask Cascade for something the server provides; it lists the tool calls it makes.
{
"mcpServers": {
"filesystem": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/Users/you/projects"]
},
"example-remote": {
"serverUrl": "https://example.com/mcp"
}
}
}
The example uses the reference filesystem server. Every listing on mcp.site shows its own command, args and environment variables, usually with a ready-made snippet for Windsurf.
Windsurf caps the number of tools that can be active at once, so switch off servers you are not using in a session.
Config formats change between releases. If a step looks different in your version, the Windsurf documentation ↗ is the source of truth.
