About File System MCP servers
File system servers let an agent work with documents and data where they live. Local servers expose allow-listed directories for reading, writing, searching and watching files; cloud servers do the same for Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box and object storage such as S3 and R2. Several add conversion and parsing so PDFs, spreadsheets and images come back as text the model can use.
Scope is everything here. Always restrict a local server to specific paths, keep secrets and keys outside those paths, and prefer servers that log every write. For cloud storage, use OAuth with the narrowest scope the provider offers. If you need the agent to edit code rather than documents, a development or version control server is usually the better tool.
