GitWhy — The Context Layer for Git

Overview

GitWhy is a Model Context Protocol server that serves as the shared AI context engine for git. It lets you save, search, and share the reasoning behind code changes, turning git history into actionable context that AI assistants can understand and reference. Instead of manually copying information between tools, your AI assistant can call GitWhy as a set of native tools to access and manage the context around your commits.

GitWhy runs locally on your machine via the npm package gitwhy-mcp, which speaks MCP over stdio. Install it with npx -y gitwhy-mcp. The current release is v0.7.9. Authentication uses an API key. The source code is available at gitwhy-cli/gitwhy on GitHub.
