Overview

Filesystem is a Model Context Protocol server that lets AI assistants read, create, and edit files directly. When connected to any MCP-compatible client, the model can decide when to use these file operations as part of a conversation or agent workflow, giving language models real access to your local filesystem.

The server runs locally on your machine using the npm package filesystem-mcp, which communicates over stdio. Setup requires only the MCP_TRANSPORT environment variable. The latest release is v1.3.0, maintained at domdomegg/filesystem-mcp on GitHub.
