About Version Control MCP servers
Version control servers connect agents to the repository workflow: searching code across repos, reading files and diffs, opening and reviewing pull requests, triaging issues, inspecting CI runs and release history, and running local git commands. The official GitHub and GitLab servers cover most hosted use; smaller servers add code review automation, changelog generation and repository analytics.
Match the server to the permissions you are comfortable delegating. Read-only tokens are enough for code search and review; write access lets the agent push branches and open pull requests, which is powerful but needs branch protection and review rules to stay safe. Prefer servers that support fine-grained tokens or OAuth over classic personal access tokens.
